The Carolina Panthers officially announced that Will Grier would start against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
Interim head coach Perry Fewell gave Grier, who has yet to make his NFL debut, the first-team reps at practice this week.Fewell announcedhis decision following Thursday’s practice.
“Will has demonstrated to us that he’s ready to start this football game on Sunday, so he will be our starter,” Fewell said.
As a freshman at Florida in 2015, Grier completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,202 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions. Before he transferred to West Virginia in 2016, the NCAA suspended Grier for one calendar year after a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder reportedly decided to transfer after McElwain would not guarantee him that he’d return to the starting role after the suspension.
