Spurrier Inspired To Coach By Gators Offense Under McElwain

Former Gators head coach and current ambassador to the Gators program Steve Spurrier was announced as the first head coach in the Alliance of American Football league, and will take the reigns of the AAF team based out of Orlando, while still serving as ambassador to Florida.

Monday, Spurrier appeared on 96.9 The Game in Orlando with host Mike Bianchi, where he stated that the state of the Gators offense the past few years under Jim McElwain played a part in his decision to get back into coaching:

“That was a little bit of it. Once you get away awhile, and of course I’ve been out two years now, you do look. And I’m watching games up there with the athletic director, and I had a sense that I think I could have helped or done a little bit better job — a lot better job — than what the Florida offense of course has done the last three years, actually. They haven’t been in the top 100 in the nation, and obviously the defense has really carried the Gators. But I really believe Dan Mullen and his staff, it’s going to be balanced now. The offense is going to be right there with the defense.”

The AAF is set to debut in February of 2019, one week after the Super Bowl.
